Description: Naranag Valley Trek: Gateway to Kashmir’s Alpine Majesty

Tucked within the towering grandeur of the Sukhnag range in the majestic Pir Panjal mountains, Tosamaidan rises as a regal plateau in the serene Budgam district of Jammu and Kashmir. Perched at an awe-inspiring altitude of 10,500 feet above sea level, this hidden gem lies a mere 50 kilometers from the bustling cityscape of Srinagar. Cloaked in an ethereal beauty, Tosamaidan unfolds a breathtaking vista of expansive meadows that, from November to April, are draped in a pristine blanket of snow, evoking a sense of timeless tranquility. This verdant haven is home to four iconic meadows—Gujjerbahak, Guttemarg, Chinamarg, and Badshahmarg—each bearing witness to an ancient narrative. The name “Tosa” itself is steeped in legend, one of which traces its origins to the legendary Sultan Mehmud Ghazni, who, upon beholding the splendor of the land, is said to have proclaimed “tushahemaidan ast”—“you are the king of meadows.” Over time, this poetic utterance evolved into the name Tosamaidan, weaving a tapestry of history and mystique into the very fabric of the land. The Tosamaidan-Yusmarg trek is not merely a journey; it is an odyssey through nature’s most exquisite canvas. A trek that traverses through nine alpine lakes, vast, undulating meadows, three serpentine rivers, and a treasure trove of flora and fauna, it offers a deeply serene yet exhilarating escape for those intrepid enough to walk its path. “The mountains are calling, and I must go,” wrote John Muir, and indeed, the call of Tosamaidan and Yusmarg is impossible to resist. The trek unfolds as one of the most enchanting in the entire Himalayan range, offering sweeping panoramas of snow-clad peaks, lush green valleys, rivers that shimmer like liquid silver, and alpine lakes that mirror the skies above—an awe-inspiring blend of natural wonders that renders this trek a must-do for connoisseurs of the Himalayas.

Spanning over eight days, this 45-kilometer journey takes the adventurer deep into the Alpine heart of the Himalayas, from Tosamaidan’s elevated meadows to the verdant pastures of Yusmarg. Along this path, trekkers will be graced by the sight of some of the region’s most pristine alpine lakes: Kharasar, Damam Sar, Navkansar, Navkansar Lakut, Bodh Sar, Pathri Sar, Lakut Sar, and Pam Sar—each lake a shimmering gem nestled amid the craggy peaks. As the poet Robert Macfarlane so eloquently put it, “Mountains are the beginning and the end of all natural scenery,” and these lakes stand as a testament to that eternal truth.
